Scholarships are awarded every year to undergraduate engineering students by the Minnesota Professional Engineers Foundation (MPEF), the non-profit, charitable foundation of MnSPE.

 

We are currently accepting scholarship applications. All applications must be received, or postmarked by Friday, October 27, 2017. The MPEF scholarship committee will select scholarship winners in December.

 



Am I eligible?

Full-time undergraduate students enrolled in an ABET-accredited engineering program at a college or university in the state of Minnesota and have at least sophomore status or above for the current school year are eligible to apply. Seniors graduating in the spring of 2018 are eligible.

 

Is the engineering program at my school ABET-accredited?

Engineering programs at the following Minnesota schools are ABET-accredited:

  • Iron Range Engineering
  • Twin Cities Engineering
  • University of Minnesota
  • University of Minnesota-Duluth
  • University of St. Thomas
  • Minnesota State University Mankato
  • St. Cloud State University
  • Winona State University

What criteria are used to award scholarships?

Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, essay and personal statement, work and volunteer experience, a letter of recommendation and more.

What is the MN Professional Engineers Foundation (MPEF)?

MPEF promotes careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). We do this by providing scholarships to college students, sponsoring and staffing STEM community events, and providing financial support to existing education and outreach programs.

 






Minnesota Professional Engineers Foundation (MPEF) Undergraduate Scholarship Application 2017-2018


 QUALIFICATIONS: You must be a full-time student enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering program at a college or university in the state of Minnesota and have at least sophomore status or above for the 2017-2018 school year. Seniors graduating in spring 2018 ARE eligible to apply.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: The Minnesota Professional Engineers Foundation will award approximately $15,000 in scholarships this year. Typical scholarship awards range from $1000-$2500 per scholarship. Applicants will be notified in December as to whether or not they received a scholarship.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The Scholarship Selection Committee will use the following criteria as the basis for selecting scholarship recipients:

  • Activities/Honors (including extracurricular and professional)
  • Short essay
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Grade Point Average
  • Unique personal statement
  • Work experience

To apply, please complete the application below and include the documents listed below with your submittal:

 

I. ESSAY– A typed essay of 300 words or less. The essay should address:How do you see the obligation of the engineer (within the parameters of the oath of the Order of the Engineer) impacting your career as an engineer? How would becoming a licensed professional engineer enhance this? Deductions will be taken for not fitting within the parameters.

II. RECOMMENDATION – A professor, supervisor or other adult you deem eligible should write a letter of recommendation on your behalf.  It is preferred, but not required, that the person writing the letter have a connection to your pursuit of an engineering degree/career.

This should be submitted separately, directly to MPEF via mail or email (registration@mnspe.org).

III. ACTIVITIES, EXPERIENCE and HONORS -

Professional Activities & Memberships: List professional activities and memberships (other than jobs) you have been involved in during college. Note each activity or membership, your level of involvement (i.e. officer position, committee service, etc.), dates of involvement/membership and your most significant contribution to each. Professional activities relate to your area of study (involvement in MnSPE student chapter, concrete canoe, ASCE, IEE, SWE, etc.).

Social & Extracurricular Activities: List your on-campus and off-campus extracurricular activities (other than jobs) you have been involved in since entering college. Note each activity, your dates of involvement and your most significant contribution to each.

Honors: List and describe any special honors (except scholarships), either in or out of school, since entering college. Any military service should be noted here.

Work Experience: Include a current résumé outlining your work experience since entering college (including paid/unpaid research projects). Include in your description: employer information, job responsibilities and dates of employment. If documenting research work, include your length of involvement with the research, estimated hours/week and your specific contribution to the project.

IV. PERSONAL STATEMENT – Write a brief paragraph (150 words or less) on what sets you apart from other candidates that you would like the scholarship selection committee to consider when reviewing your application.  This could include an extraordinary experience, something unique not otherwise documented in this application, or any other information you think the committee should know about to give you full consideration. Deductions will be taken for not fitting within the parameters.

A professor, supervisor or other adult you deem eligible should write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. It is preferred, but not required, that the person writing the letter have a connection to your pursuit of an engineering degree/career. Your letter should be sent by the writer directly to MPEF, where it will be added to your scholarship application.
