Program Overview:

 

Our national electrical grid and infrastructure is one of the most outstanding “machines” ever built.  But it is aging rapidly, and receives a D+ rating on the American Society of Civil Engineers' report card. While Minnesota's energy report received a C rating, what does this mean for our engineering industry in Minnesota today and into the future?

 

Join us for this half-day interactive workshop that includes several presentations and an opportunity for a panel question & answer and discussion session. The seminar is intended to provide a well-rounded look at the current state and future direction of Minnesota's electrical infrastructure, and is intended for all engineering disciplines.

 

In advance of the program, attendees are invited to watch The Power of Minnesota documentary on "Our Energy. Our Community. Our Stories." as further background information for the discussion portion of the program.


Great River Energy will provide beverages and breakfast snacks in the morning. Attendees may choose to order a boxed lunch that will be delivered on a break near the end of the main presentations, prior to the Q&A panel discussion.

Presentation Details & Presenters:


1.) Overview: Current State of Minnesota's Electrical Infrastructure

This presentation will provide an overview of where we are at currently with Minnesota's electrical grid, and will specifically cover:

  • Benefits and challenges with existing infrastructure
  • Current trends
  • What is being done to prepare for the future

 

Presenter: Dave Kempf, Great River Energy Manager of Transmission Planning

 



2.) Minnesota’s Energy Policy Approach - Cause and Effect

This presentation will cover the 2019 Minnesota legislative preview and consider potential energy policy issues that can affect our local engineering community. This presentation will specifically address the policy-making process and its unpredictability, and the importance of educating legislators and building coalitions, within the framework of energy policy.

 

Presenter: Stacey S. Fujii is the Director of Governmental Affairs for Great River Energy. In her current position, Ms. Fujii leads Great River Energy’s representation before Congress, the Minnesota state legislature and other executive agencies.  Prior to joining Great River Energy, Ms. Fujii was the Government Affairs Director for a multi-state investor-owned utility.

Ms. Fujii holds a J.D. from Hamline University School of Law, as well as a Masters in Public Administration (M.A) from Hamline University.  She received a B.A. (with distinction) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

 

 

 

3.) A Look into the Future: Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) Study – What would happen if all electricity in the region were 100% renewable?

Presenter: Jordan Bakke, Manager of Policy Studies, MISO

 

 


4.) Case Study – Power Supply Planning for Rochester: A 100% Renewable Energy Vision

 

Rochester’s existing wholesale power supply contract expires in 2030. Starting next year, we will begin the process of studying alternatives to replace that supply, including 100% renewable options and battery storage. This presentation will focus on factors to consider when looking at various supply options.

 

Specifically, we will review the following considerations in our discussion:

  • Capacity vs. Energy
  • Electric wholesale markets
  • Price hedges
  • What does 100% renewable mean?


Presenter: Mark Kotschevar is a 37-year employee of Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) and currently serves as the general manager.  In addition to his present position, he has also served as director of core services, manager of maintenance and construction, and several engineering positions within RPU. These positions have given him broad experiences in electric generation, transmission, distribution, water supply and its distribution, system operations and engineering. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from North Dakota State University and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Winona State University.  He is a Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota
