Ethical Decision-Making for Technical Professionals

ETHICS WEBINAR - 1.0 PDH

Registration for this webinar through MnSPE is via webinar ONLY.

To attend the full day ASHRAE conference at the Radisson Blu Mall of America

that includes this and the Ethics II session led by MnSPE, register directly with ASHRAE here.

Program:

Professional engineers help clients and other stakeholders to make decisions based on the best available information and sound technical judgement. This can involve informing, educating, persuading, giving direction, or some combination thereof. This session will consider some ethical challenges that arise from bringing technical expertise to decision processes, and present techniques for making decisions that address these challenges and empower others to make the best choices.

Learning Objectives:

This interactive presentation will address practical skills and techniques, including:

  • Defining the nature and implication of key decisions
  • Understanding and addressing the ethical risks associated with “information asymmetry”
  • Differentiating multiple modes of empowering decision-makers as an expert
  • Maintaining transparency in recommendations and persuasion

Presenter:

Charles A. “Chad” Weinstein is president of Ethical Leaders in Action, LLC, and author of Thinking Aloud: Reflections on Ethical Leadership. Ethical Leaders in Action (ELA) provides leadership development, ethics education and strategic consulting services to industries ranging from construction and engineering to medical devices and insurance. He also works extensively with law enforcement, fire and EMS, and health care leaders. Weinstein’s approach to ethics is positive, focused not on avoiding wrongdoing, but on helping leaders at all levels of an agency to work together in pursuit of mission and excellence.

Weinstein has been an educator, consultant and manager for more than 25 years. Prior to his work in ethical leadership development, Weinstein led teams and organizations in market and technology consulting, most recently as Vice President of Client Services for Guideline, Inc. He has served clients in a wide variety of industries, ranging from consumer products, medical devices and pharmaceuticals to heavy equipment manufacturing, mining and petroleum extraction. Weinstein is also a community faculty member of the Metropolitan State University School of Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement, and has been an adjunct faculty member of the Carlson School of Management. He holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in ethics (philosophy) from the University of Minnesota, and a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin.
