Program:

 

After eight years of planning and preparation, Great River Energy recently upgraded the utility's unique high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) system, successfully completing one of the most significant transmission projects in its history.

 

This presentation will cover the planning, engineering, project and construction management required to safely and successfully complete the upgrade project on time and under budget during a 74-day power plant outage. Participants will also learn about Great River Energy’s coordination with multiple contractors and countries to ensure a successful project. Following the presentation, participants will tour the Dickinson Converter Station in Buffalo, Minnesota, and will see the work completed during the outage. This is a unique opportunity to view a transmission system asset as well as learn about the important role HVDC will play in the future grid.

 

Presenter:

 

Greg Schutte, PE, Leader of Substation Physical Design with Great River Energy, served as the HVDC upgrade project manager. He holds an MBA from the University of St. Thomas and three Bachelors degrees: Electrical Engineering from the University of MN, and Physics and Engineering Science from Bethel University. Greg is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Minnesota and North Dakota and has 15 years of experience in the electric utility industry.

 

Due to the unique nature of this program, please note the following:

  • All attendees MUST SHOW a valid government issued drivers license/ID/PASSPORT prior to being allowed on-site
  • Tour participants must wear natural-fiber clothing (cotton) - no synthetics (polyester/nylon)
  • Tour participants must wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear
  • Tour participants must be able to climb stairs and walk on rough, rocky terrain
  • Safety glasses and hard hats will be provided and are required on the tour

 

Schedule:

 

  • 2:00 - 2:30 PM - Registration
  • 2:30 - 5:30 PM - Presentation and Tour
  • All are invited for an informal social following the tour at Norm's Wayside Rest, located near the converter station

 

Cost:

  • Membership must be current on the date of the seminar.

 

Deadline to Register: Thursday, October 31

  • All registrations after October 31 will be assessed a $50 late fee through Monday, November 4, 2019
  • No registrations will be accepted after November 4
  • No walk-in registrations will be accepted
