WEBINAR 1: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones) in Engineering

Time: 9:00 - 10:00 am

Program Description: This webinar will provide a high-level overview of some of the current applications of drones, how Bolton & Menk is using drones and examples of efficiencies and safety concerns that can be alleviated with the use of UAVs. Additionally, this webinar will cover commercial operations in Minnesota, considerations for companies contemplating the use of drones and a snapshot of the current regulatory landscape regarding leveraging drones in engineering.

Presenter: Brian Simmons, PE is a Principal at Bolton & Menk. Brian is an NDSU graduate and a civil engineer with 15 years of industry experience who is passionate about leveraging technologies that make engineering safer and more efficient. In addition to his other roles at Bolton & Menk, Brian manages a drone program that includes 22 pilots distributed across a five-state area.

WEBINAR 2: Introduction to the Hyperloop Transportation System

Time: 10:15 - 11:15 am

Program Description: Transportation defines our human experience: where we live, where we work, and how we connect. Traffic congestion, poor air quality and rapid urbanization are a few of the many concerns surrounding existing modes of transportation, as well as expected growth in cities and regions across the United States.

This presentation will provide an overview of the hyperloop: a tube-based inter- and intra-city transportation system that moves people and goods at airplane speeds safely, efficiently and sustainably. Passenger and cargo capsules levitate inside a tube using next-generation passive magnetic technology and a linear electric motor. By creating a low-pressure environment inside the tube using vacuum technology, friction is considerably reduced allowing for not only faster speeds, but a safer, cleaner and quieter form of energy-efficient transport.

Current studies in the Great Lakes Megaregion will confirm the transformative nature of the hyperloop and will energize a transport revolution not seen in over 100 years.

Presenter: Chuck Michael, PE, Head of Feasibility Studies for Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Inc., is an accomplished technology innovation thought-leader with over 35 years of significant experience combining the study, design and construction of major railroad and mining projects, and deep underground high energy physics laboratories in collaboration with University of California/Berkeley, Fermi National Laboratory and the National Science Foundation.  He currently directs the U.S. feasibility studies for Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Inc., applying skills in transport economics, transportation planning, heavy civil/structural engineering and project management. He completed his undergraduate studies in civil engineering with graduate studies in particle physics and structural engineering, is a licensed Professional Engineer in Minnesota and serves as a member of the MIT Technology Review Global Panel.

WEBINAR 3: Next Gen Nuclear Power Plant Design

Time: 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Program Description: In a typical nuclear reactor, the fission reaction takes place at very high pressures and produces radioactive gases, presenting major inherent risks. Though the nuclear industry has successfully handled these risks and nuclear power today is acceptably safe, these safety measures come at an enormous cost.

This presentation will share the basics of the Stable Salt Reactor, a cleaner, safer and less expensive alternative to traditional nuclear power. Though the technology has been understood for decades, engineers and scientists with IDOM and Moltex Energy collaborated to solve difficult engineering challenges and how to apply this technology. Participants will learn how a Stable Salt Reactor works and how it can provide cleaner, safer and cheaper electricity around the world.

Presenter: Sean Ford, PE, is a Senior Project Manager at IDOM Inc. headquartered in Bilbao, Spain with offices in Minneapolis and Atlanta, where he manages mechanical and industrial engineering projects. Sean holds a BSME from Michigan Technological University and has more than 17 years of experience in mechanical design in many areas of industry.  In addition to general industrial projects he also has experience with US naval nuclear reactors, commercial nuclear power plants, concentrating solar power (CSP), oil refineries and grid-scale molten salt energy storage. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in several states, including Minnesota, and in Canada.
